Bulgaria is known as an \u201eagricultural” country. Between 1944-1990
\nBulgaria was one of the major exporters of fruits and vegetables in
\nthe Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON). However if you
\nnow go to any of the Bulgarian markets or small shops you will have to
\nbuy fruits and vegetables from Turkey, Greece, Italy, Peru and even
\nSweden, even the ones that are traditional to Bulgaria like tomatoes,
\ncucambers, cellary etc. Very little of the production especially in
\nthe big cities comes from local producers.<\/p>\n
\u201eA Garden of One’s Own” is a long term research project, a small
\nbalcony garden and an installation display that aims to raise
\nquestions about the current Bulgarian economic situation and its
\nrelationship with global economy. This project also addresses the new
\nbiotechnologycal advances applied in the global food production that
\nalso partly caused this particular twist in the local agriculture and
\nmarket.<\/p>\n
Boryana Rossa collects seeds from the foreign fruits and vegetables
\nsold on the Bulgarian market and plants them in pots. By that she
\ncreates a peculiar \u201ebootleg” of this foreign agricultural production
\nthat create a beautiful \u201egardenly” spirit on the balcony of the
\nartist’s apartment. The installation consists of documentation photos
\nand texts from the process and an educational display that immitates
\nfashion butique.<\/p>\n

\nArts. Most of Rossa’s works have a feminist perspective and have been
\nshown internationally at venues such as steirischer herbst, Graz; The
\n8-th International Biennial, Cairo; National Gallery of Fine Arts,
\nSofia; 1st Balkan Biennale, Thesaloniki; Kunstwerke, Berlin, 2-nd
\nInternational Art Biennial of Buenos Aires , The 1st and 2nd Moscow
\nBiennial and Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the
\nBrooklyn Museum, NY.<\/p>\n
\nestablishes UTRAFUTURO–an international group of artists that engages
\nwith issues of technology and science and their social, political and
\nethic implications. Performances of Rossa and Mavromatti have been
\nincluded in the retrospective show Renegades\u201425 Years of Performance
\nArt at Exit Art, 2006 and in prestigious international exhibitions of
\nart and technology like the Biennial for Electronic Art, Perth (BEAP);
\nFoundation for Art and Creative Technologies (FACT), Liverpool;
\nSociety for Art and Technology (SAT), Montreal.<\/p>\n
\nof collaboration between the Center for Biotechnology and
\nInterdisciplinary Studies (CBTIS) and the Electronic Arts department
\nof Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, that gives an opportunity of
\nclose collaboration between artists and scientists. Rossa holds the
\nprestigious award Essential Reading for Art Writers of the Institute
\nof Contemporary Art (ICA, Sofia) for 2008. She works under the name
